Lecture: Matthew Jacoby

Matthew Jacoby

Discover forgotten dimensions of biblical spirituality with minister and musician Matthew Jacoby.

Author of Deeper Places: Experiencing God in the Psalms (Baker, 2013), Dr Matthew Jacoby will be discussing elements of the spirituality of the psalms that have become largely counter-cultural within the contemporary Christian church. He will argue, for example, that the absence of gestures of complaint in our devotional vocabulary creates a disassociative effect that dulls our capacity for genuine spiritual experience. The psalms offer profound insights into the dynamics of the spiritual life and portray the necessary tensions within which faith is grown to fruition.

Jacoby is the teaching pastor at Barrabool Hills Baptist Church in Geelong, Victoria. He is an adjunct lecturer at the Melbourne School of Theology and the leading member of Sons of Korah, an Australian-based band devoted to giving a fresh voice to the biblical psalms. Jacoby received his doctorate in philosophy from The University of Melbourne.

Presented by Avondale College of Higher Education, Avondale Conservatorium, Avondale Seminary, Manifest and Sydney Adventist Forum.
