Lecture: Dr Barry Oliver
May 14, 2016, 3.00 PM-4.00 PM
FreeJoin Dr Barry Oliver as he reflects on the mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, the church’s decision-making process and his time as President of the church in the South Pacific.
Following ministry as a missionary, pastor and Avondale College of Higher Education lecturer, Oliver received a call to serve as General Secretary of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the South Pacific 1997 and as President in 2007. He retired from that position at the worldwide church’s five-yearly business session in 2015. Oliver’s doctoral thesis examined church organisation and structure and he continues to have an interest in that topic. He is ideally placed to talk about the state of the church and about the issues affecting it.
He will reflect in his presentation on: what the church is doing to fulfil its mission; how the church makes decisions—is the process too centralised and how can church members contribute more effectively to it?; the implications of having more administrators than field ministers employed by the church; and what he might have done differently in retrospect.
Includes: question and answer session.
