Research prize leads to journal publication

A win for best research paper at an international literary journalism studies conference has earned an Avondale lecturer academic and financial credit.

Dr Lindsay Morton presented “Rereading Code: Representation, Verification and a Case of Epistemic (Ir)responsibility” at the International Association for Literary Journalism Studies Conference in Minneapolis (Minnesota, USA) last year.

The paper argues, as did Morton’s PhD thesis, that differentiating between an epistemological and an ethical reading is more helpful in verifying the truth claims of literary journalism.

Judges named the paper as the conference’s best research paper. Morton received the Greenberg Prize in recognition.

The association’s journal, Literary Journalism Studies, has now published the paper—it appears in the Spring 2016 issue.

Besides publication in the journal and other association-related financial benefits, the prize also offers almost $150 in cash. Morton and several of the other prize recipients donated the cash to the association’s graduate travel fund.

Morton is Assistant Dean in the Faculty of Arts, Nursing and Theology at Avondale College of Higher Education. She describes receiving the prize and having her paper published in the journal as a “gratifying” experience. “It’s wonderful to have the paper seen by a wider audience and to know it’s contributing to discussion in the field. It’s also wonderful to represent Avondale in my international scholarly community.”

Morton is an active member of the association. She served as Publicity Committee Chair from 2013 to 2015 and since then as a member of the Board of Advisors. “This incredibly collegial group has made me feel welcome from the beginning,” she says.

Professor Tony Williams, the Vice-President (Academic and Research) at Avondale, is proud of Morton. “The prize is an acknowledgement of her growth as a researcher and another demonstration of the quality of the academics at Avondale.”
