More course options than ever

Bachelor of Arts students at Avondale can now study almost anything after the college of higher education exponentially increased its course options.

The students can choose from any major at Avondale or from any major at any other higher education provider—and have it appear on their Avondale testamur.

“So, effectively, we offer every major in the world,” says Associate Professor Daniel Reynaud, dean of the Faculty of Arts and Theology.

One of the majors is in chaplaincy—Avondale is one of the first higher education providers in Australia to offer degrees in chaplaincy—and it is proving popular with students.

Some 15 are enrolled in the initial chaplaincy unit and 21 in the initial counselling unit of the new program.

It is fulfilling a need, says Daniel. “Australian governments now insist chaplains are qualified, and Avondale is one of the only places where chaplaincy is available in a bachelor’s degree.”

Avondale offers chaplaincy as a major in three degree programs: Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Teaching and Bachelor of Ministry and Theology.

Graduate Alina Coccetti is the face of the marketing material for the degrees. Her vision for chaplaincy? “To empower students and their families to deal with the challenges life throws at them.” Alina is now fulfilling this vision: she is working as a chaplain at Brisbane Adventist College.
