Josh Bolst and Karlie Fraser are, officially, the top students on Avondale’s Lake Macquarie campus this year.

Both received $1500 after being named winners of the Avondale Prize for Excellence during Forum on October 26. “I didn’t even know the prize existed; that’s not very academic of me,” says Josh. Karlie shares his surprise. “I wouldn’t describe myself as an excellent student,” she says. “Heaps of others could have received this prize.”

Josh is completing a Bachelor of Arts specialising in communication. He is a previous academic prize winner, receiving the Digital Media Prize this past year. Sponsor Adventist Media Network now employs Josh as an intern. He notes how receiving the prize acknowledges the contribution of others who live off campus. “You don’t have to live in the residences to get the full Avondale experience.”

Karlie, a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Teaching student, is majoring in modern history and religious studies. She is also the leader of Student Associated Ministries. Receiving the prize shows Avondale values this aspect of education, says Karlie. “I hope it encourages other students to get involved because getting involved enhances the experience.”
