Watercolour paintings and pen drawings by a local academic, architect and artist on display in Avondale Libraries (Lake Macquarie campus) portray an international perspective on place.

Neville Clouten painting

Watercolour paintings such as this one of the Italian fishing village of Portofino feature in Neville Clouten’s Here and There exhibition.

The collection, called Here and There, shows the inspirational role travel has played in Dr Neville Clouten’s career. It includes pieces Neville created on location in this area, such as two depicting Old Sydney Town and two from his home town of Wangi, to those he created while visiting harbours and towns across Europe and the United States.

“As much as possible, I like to breathe the air the local people are breathing,” says Neville. “I really want the experience—even if it’s only for one day.”

Neville has a long association with Avondale College of Higher Education. As a school boy, he took violin lessons at Avondale and played in the orchestra. He completed his Higher School Certificate here and, later, presented lectures on architecture and art. The exhibition is “like coming back home—it’s infrequent but meaningful.”
