Academics’ books sell well

Thursday, April 21, 2016

New books by two academics at Avondale College of Higher Education are selling strongly both in Australia and now overseas.

Second printing for historian’s Gallipoli chaplain biography

An Avondale academic’s biography of an Anzac chaplain worshipped by soldiers despite being a wowser is now in its second printing.

The Man the Anzacs Revered tells the story of William “Fighting Mac” McKenzie, who became the most famous Anzac by the end of the Great War even though he stood for “almost everything the typical digger loved to hate,” says author Associate Professor Daniel Reynaud, Assistant Dean (Learning and Teaching) in the Faculty of Arts, Nursing and Theology at Avondale College of Higher Education. The Scottish-born Salvation Army officer served on Gallipoli and on the Western Front as chaplain of the Australian Imperial Force’s 4th Battalion. “He railed against booze, brothels, betting and bad language, and he ran frequent evangelistic campaigns for the Anzacs where he forcefully appealed to them to become Christians. But the soldiers just about worshipped him.”

The story continues to appeal to readers, with Signs Publishing printing an additional 1000 copies of the book. “We expect the book will attract some more attention around Anzac Day this year,” says Book Editor Nathan Brown.

An excerpt will appear in an April issue of War Cry, the magazine of the Salvation Army in New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga. And Koorong, the largest retailer of Christian books and media in Australia, will continue to feature the book in its catalogue.

Seminarian’s Old Testament reading of New Testament prophecy launches in North America

A book by Avondale Seminary Head Dr Kayle de Waal is now available in one of the world’s largest literature markets.

Ancient Words, Present Hope explores the significance of the Old Testament for reading and understanding the New Testament book of Revelation.

Its launch in North America follows a marketing seminar for Adventist Book Center managers hosted by distributor Pacific Press in Nampa, Idaho, February 27-28.

The book launched in Australia in August this past year and de Waal used it as the basis for a one-day symposium on the book of Revelation at Wantirna Seventh-day Adventist Church in Melbourne, March 5.

It has been selling well—about 750 copies—since the symposium, with Seventh-day Adventist Church conferences in Australia purchasing copies for their annual conventions and the head office of the church in the South Pacific purchasing 195 copies for its Week of Spiritual Emphasis. Sales have been strong in Papua New Guinea, too.

In North America, Ancient Words, Present Hope can be purchased from Adventist Book Centers or online at www.adventistbookcenter.com/ancient-words-present-hope.html.
