Sydney campus to host Jesus. All. gathering this time

Avondale College of Higher Education will host a gathering of the One project for a second consecutive year.

Participants met on the Lake Macquarie campus this past year but, come August 20-21 this year, will meet in the Clinical Education Centre on the Sydney campus. The campus, home to the Discipline of Nursing, is adjacent to Sydney Adventist Hospital.

In its fifth year in Australia, the One project remains focused on celebrating and renewing the supremacy of Jesus in the Seventh-day Adventist Church. “Can we ever talk enough about Jesus?” asks Rod Long, Australian coordinator of the One project. “Personally, I find it inspiring and challenging to be intentional and set aside a weekend dedicated to discovering more about Jesus.”

The theme for this year’s Australian gatherings—the One project will also return to Perth, August 27-28—is “His Mission, His Passion,” and is drawn from a new book by keynote speaker Dr William Johnsson.

An expatriate Australian now based in California, USA, Johnsson is retired editor of Adventist Review, the news magazine of the worldwide Adventist Church. Among his retirement projects has been the two-volume series Jesus of Nazareth, published by the church’s Biblical Research Institute.

Joining Johnsson as featured speakers are the One project board members Pr Dilys Brooks, Dr Tim Gillespie and Dr Terry Swenson, board chair Pr Japhet De Oliveira and others. As well as presentations and worship, the host venue will offer different discussion formats, allowing participants to engage with and respond to the material presented.

“There is always something more to learn,” reflects Long. “And, as someone who struggles with busyness, blocking out time to attend the One project ensures I refocus and recalibrate my life. I also love being in a place with hundreds of other people passionately experiencing the same thing—and I’ve found this to be other people’s experience, too.”

Avondale, as a gold sponsor of the One project, is also funding copies of For the One: Voices from The One Project for Adventist chaplains and field ministers in Sydney. The book includes 19 adapted presentations from gatherings during the first three years of the One project.

the One project gatherings in Australia this year will also include the TOP Kids program for children aged four to 12, allowing them to rediscover Jesus in fun and creative ways.

Registration for the One project’s gathering in Australia closes on July 12.
