Basketball and touch teams do best at Uni Games

Avondale finished sixth in per capita rankings at the Eastern University Games in Wollongong, July 3-7.

The college of higher education entered teams in men’s basketball, futsal and touch football. For the first time, it also entered teams in women’s futsal and mixed ultimate frisbee. Individuals represented Avondale in golf and in squash.

Sebastian Hutchison and Josh Waring’s results in squash earned Avondale its highest placing—fourth—at the games.

The basketballers (sixth) finished with the best win–loss record of any of the Avondale teams. Their four wins, which included games against Western Sydney University and the Universities of Canberra and of Wollongong, earned the team a spot in the playoff for fifth and sixth.

Big wins, narrow losses and a draw saw the touch team finish fifth.

The games in Wollongong were Avondale’s fifth. Its best result—third in per capita rankings—came in 2013.

The Eastern University Games is the largest of four regional games held simultaneously across Australia. It featured 3000 students from universities and TAFEs in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory.

The regional games serve as qualifying competitions for the Australian University Games, which Perth will host in September this year.
