New book by Avondale alumnus encourages readers to live well today for tomorrow

Is it ever too early to be thinking about retirement? The answer depends on whether or not you want the experience to be comfortable and deeply satisfying.

Retirement Ready? is a new book by pastor, sociologist, Avondale College of Higher Education alumnus and new retiree Dr Bruce Manners. All he knew about retirement before writing the book is most of what I hear: how much money will we need to maintain our lifestyle (and, as a 33-year-old, I shudder to think what that figure is likely to be). But retirement is much more than what’s in the bank.

Retirement Ready? follows Manners as he unravels what it means to retire well. The book is personal and practical. And it features the voices of professionals—Manners connects with those who’ve studied retirement.

Money does matter, of course, and Manners dedicates one chapter in the book to it. But he invites his readers to ask other questions, such as “What do I want to do when I retire?”, “Who do I want to do it with?” and “What will my week consist of without the framework of work?”. The book also includes information about staying healthy, strengthening your marriage (and other relationships) and “keeping your marbles.”

This whole-of-life approach to retirement is refreshing and brings the Seventh-day Adventist health message to the fore. Signs Publishing is publishing a series of wellbeing books. Retirement Ready? could be considered one of these.

I recommend making Retirement Ready? a part of your retirement plan, even if you’re not yet ready to begin this next stage of your life. As Manners makes clear, the key to living well in retirement is living well today.
