Nursing FAQs

You asked; we answered! Here are some FAQ’s about our Bachelor of Nursing course

Where does the course take place? (Which campus?)

Our nursing students have an entire campus dedicated to them in Wahroonga, Sydney (on the grounds of the Sydney Adventist Hospital). Avondale’s nursing students are able to complete their full degree on the Sydney campus (3 years), OR can complete their first year at our Lake Macquarie campus where all our other courses are offered. They then complete their final two years on the Sydney campus.

What are the ATAR requirements?

The minimum ATAR requirement for a Bachelor of Nursing at Avondale is 63.
However, there are other ways you can be accepted into this course:

General Admission Options for Domestic Undergrad (applicable to all courses):

1)   Recent secondary higher education (completed the ATAR or equivalent within the past two years)

2)   VET (Cert IV or higher)

3)   Work/Life Experience (successful completion of appropriate entrance exams)

4)   Previous success in higher education study or a bridging course

Course-specific Admission Criteria for Nursing:

1)   Read and understand requirements of being a nurse (sign online)

2)   Provide a written confirmation of country of birth and country in which years 7-12 schooling were completed

3)   If you’re an international applicant, you must meet the English language standard set by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia

How do I apply for Bachelor of Nursing?

Applying is easy! Our online application portal allows you to do the entire application process online. Applications for Semester 1 2020 close February 24; but domestic students can still enrol for Semester 2 2020 on a part-time basis.

If you’re keen on studying nursing in 2021, applications open September 1 2020. Our calendars for 2020 and 2021 are up and have all deadlines and openings posted for your convenience!

What would my timetable look like?

There are a few different options for your timetable, but we have some sample nursing timetables up on our website based off the year of study and campus location.

Do students work on cadavers?

Believe it or not, this is a common question! Our Bachelor of Nursing does not use cadavers, but students practise using simulation technology in labs.

What supplies do I need before beginning the course?

You might be anxious to hop on getting supplies right away, but during orientation you’ll have access to purchase everything you’ll need for your course, including textbooks and uniforms!

“Is it good?”

“Good” might be relative, but we think our nursing course is great! We offer ample placement opportunities as well as pracs and a large number of clinical hours. Our facilities are fantastic, too! The Sydney campus is connected to the recently remodelled Sydney Adventist Hospital, which is a teaching hospital with staff accustomed to working with students. Let’s not forget to mention over 85% of Avondale nursing grads found employment within four months of finishing their degree.

But don’t take our word for it- come see for yourself😊

Any tips for surviving first year?

The number one thing we hear from our nursing students is “study!” Nursing is rewarding, but not necessarily easy… there’s a reason the library is a popular place! Get started on assessments early, and study in groups for things like tests and quizzes to break up solo study time. Experiment with different environments to see where you study best, then stick with what works!

There you have it – your questions, answered! If there are still nursing things you’re wondering about, feel free to shoot us an email at [email protected] or ring us at +61 2 9480 3630. Best of luck!
