Young alumnus awarded for service and for seeking to address inequity in healthcare

Avondale laid a strong foundation for Joshua Page’s move into medicine. An Avondale President’s Scholarship recipient, he feels privileged to have had opportunities to: play with Avondale Jazz Ensemble and sing with The Promise; make stronger spiritual connections, and; meet wife Ashley, a ministry, theology and soon-to-be counselling alum.

Joshua graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 2014. He is now a Junior Medical Officer for the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District after completing a Doctor of Medicine through the University of Wollongong this past year. He works mostly out of the Shoalhaven District Memorial Hospital in Nowra with some rotations at Wollongong Hospital. The good news for someone who seeks to practice in rural areas: Joshua has an existing offer of employment for residency in 2021.

Values such as equity, justice and compassion guide Joshua. He minored in international poverty and development studies at Avondale and, during a gap year that coincided with a severe earthquake, interned with the Adventist Development and Relief Agency in Nepal. Witnessing the transformation in Kathmandu as the country recovered proved cathartic. “Candles lined the streets, continuing in unbroken lines even over the rubble. Tikka portraits and the names of family members lost in the quake sprung up in common areas and intersections. The people had pulled together to grieve and, in doing so, had demonstrated their strength.”

Avondale Alumni honours Dr Joshua Page for providing compassionate service and for seeking to address issues of inequity in healthcare.
