Receives top award for integrating evidence-based discovery with a journey of faith
Graham Stacey’s contribution to people care, first in Australia then the United States, addresses the interface of religion, psychology and ethics in contemporary culture.
The beginning was youth ministry but denominational turmoil prompted the pursuit of a psychology degree and master’s degrees in family therapy, experimental psychology and clinical ethics, finishing with a PhD in clinical psychology. He applied this knowledge as Director of Warburton Health Care Centre and of the Psychological Services Training Clinic at Loma Linda University. A move into academia—at La Sierra University, Loma Linda and Avondale—followed. He retired as an Associate Dean for Admissions and Student Affairs at Loma Linda.
Avondale spurred critical thinking, evidence-based discovery and their implications for systemic change. These remain a passion, as does prioritising connection over ideology. Publications analysing student performance have now given way to family history research. The latter “provides a rich understanding of our roots and formations.”
Graham has embraced the integration of his academic disciplines with a journey of faith. “Human beings are not one-dimensional—we’re wonderfully complex. Every source of information helps us better understand ourselves and each other.” His advice: “Keep connected. Life is short. We need each other for every stage.”
Avondale Alumni honours Dr Graham Stacey as its Alumnus of the Year in 2020 for bringing a greater understanding of human nature to the continuing revelation of divine character.
