Alumnus tells his life story on ABC’s Conversations

The story of how an Avondale alumnus and his family escaped religious persecution in Yugoslavia features on one of the national broadcaster’s most popular programs.

Pr Peter Stojanovic tells of his family’s daring plan as a guest of ABC Conversations presenter Sarah Kanowski in an episode released on October 29.

After arriving in Australia as a boy, Stojanovic soon found a job with the rest of his family in the meat works. But meeting Mary—and marrying at 19—changed his life.

Emboldened by a conversion experience, Stojanovic wanted to become a Seventh-day Adventist minister and began studying for his matriculation. “To go forward, I had to go back.” He enrolled at Avondale College as one of the top students in the state.

Stojanovic (BA Theology 1979) now ministers to perpetrators of domestic violence. His message to them: “Accountability and responsibility is your ticket to freedom. You determine the kind of person you want to be.”
