Jacinda didn’t plan to change her degree after coming to Avondale. After all, she’d been studying a childcare diploma in Melbourne and was working in a similar role at the time.

Jacinda used her diploma to enter a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Teaching (Birth-12) at Avondale. She loved children and enjoyed the work she did during her diploma, but the more she got into her degree, the more she realised it wasn’t quite right for her.

However, while studying teaching, Jacinda did one of the most important things a student can do at Avondale—she got involved. And that’s how she found her real passion.

Jacinda is a people person with a warm energy and a love for connecting with others. This led her to accepting several student leadership roles; in the dormitories as a residential assistant and as a graphic designer for Avondale’s student magazine and its yearbook.

“I think of all the things I’ve done at Avondale and if I hadn’t had those experiences, what kind of leader or creative would I be?”

So, it was in accepting opportunities that Jacinda realised she needed to fully focus on her passion for people, creative design and administrative work. “Around the time I was taking on more creative roles, I’m like, ‘Oh, I love this. Why don’t I just pursue that more?’”

Jacinda changed to a Bachelor of Arts to focus on communication, graphic design and human resources. “I wanted to do so many different things, and I feel like the arts degree would let me do that.”

When she graduates at the end of the year, Jacinda wants to use what she’s learnt to help young adults enhance their experience with God.
