President A.

Tuesday, March 9, 2021

Meet Amity Bradford, who is launching into her last year at Avondale as one of our student presidents for 2021. The arts and teaching student loves her family and community and believes from little things big things grow.

Describe your perfect weekend.
Up at the family farm reading a book, mustering cows and floating down the rapids on a tractor tyre.

Who are three people who make you smile?
It’s so hard to narrow it down to individual people. I’d have to say toddlers in general make me smile.

Who is your hero?
My family. I don’t know where I’d be without them.

If you could speak on one subject for half an hour with no notes, what would it be?
Food. I honestly love the stuff.

Can you recommend any podcasts/books/music/accounts to follow?
I’d recommend following @neverneverlodge on Instagram. It’s my family farm account and has some cute pictures of cows.

Why did you choose to come to Avondale?
I came to Avondale because it was close to home, offered a degree I wanted to study, and gave me the opportunity to make connections in the community.

What does the Avondale experience mean to you?
Showing up and getting involved in each and every aspect of life on campus and having fun doing so.

What’s the favourite thing about your course?
The favourite thing about my course is that it’s given me so many opportunities to grow and step out of my comfort zone. For example, my course allowed me to travel to Tonga to teach for three weeks (before COVID, of course).

What are you hoping to get out of 2021 as student president?
I’m hoping to learn more about how Avondale works and how to best represent the student body to reach the outcomes desired.

What are you hoping to get out of 2021 as a student?
I’m hoping to graduate for one, and to laugh and make the most of each opportunity in my last year here.

What does transformation mean to you?
I think transformation is a process of change. It’s the little things that combine to make a substantial difference in what was existing before.

Do you think Avondale is a place of transformation?
I do. It gives opportunities for students to change the little things that eventually result in larger changes in their lives. This can be something as simple as playing on a sports team with someone new, attending a Friday night worship program, or chatting with a lecturer.

What advice would you give to future Avondale students?
I’d encourage future students to get involved. It’s as simple as that. Show up to events, talk to other students, become a part of the community that is Avondale. You’ll form lifelong connections and discover more about yourself.
