Well travelled couple still ministering and teaching

Kevin and Glenda Amos met on a computer date at Avondale and married soon after graduating—he with a BA Theology and she a DipTch Primary.

As a ministry–teaching team, Kevin and Glenda began their Seventh-day Adventist Church service in southern New South Wales. Then with children Andrea and Malcolm, they accepted a call to Papua New Guinea—Kevin had leadership roles in the Madang-Manus and Sepik Missions, the latter as president. Over the next decade, the family grew to six with the additions of Orelle and Sheralyn, and Glenda would return to teaching.

Another 10-year stint followed in North New Zealand with roles for Kevin as pastor and district director and Glenda as a teacher at Longburn Adventist College. In Victoria, Kevin ministered to ministers while Glenda discovered new callings in hospital chaplaincy and in health. These volunteer roles led to one as health director for the church in Tasmania and then others with the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, including national and world director for children’s work and national treasurer. Kevin served as president in Tasmania before returning to local church ministry, now in northern New South Wales.

In retirement, Kevin and Glenda continue to minister and teach. They volunteer in the media ministry of The Incredible Journey. Glenda marks lessons for the online Bible school and Kevin presents classes on Zoom. Kevin also helps to administer a women’s refuge and 10 op shops. They enjoy working with those who are making a difference in the community. “While education is helpful to sharpen the axe, it is not until you start swinging it that you learn what reality is all about,” says Kevin.

Empowering people to make positive decisions that help them contribute to society and be a blessing to others is one of ways Glenda has made a significant impact. Kevin’s impact has been helping churches run effectively and efficiently. However, being a father and mother trumps all. Kevin and Glenda have had the “privilege” of others—girls in Papua New Guinea who helped in the home and single mothers who needed encouragement, support and a sense of belonging—joining the family as foster members. “We have 17 biological grandchildren and quite a few more extra grandchildren,” says Glenda. “They all call us Paaps and Toots.”

The Class of 1972 honours Kevin and Glenda Amos for serving their church and community with a compassionate heart for others.
