Honoured for care of family, friends and faith

People bring joy to Alex Afoa’s life. “I made lifelong friends at Avondale. They’re important to me because, even now, they offer encouragement, accountability and inspiration.” Family members—uncles and aunts—encouraged him to attend. Yes, you’ll get a great Christ-centred education, they said, and you’ll love the dorm and sporting life. These conversations had the biggest influence on Alex and reflected his experience. “It wasn’t just a place to study; it was a place to grow relationships.” With one student, in particular. “I met Rebecca, my life partner and the mother of my two beautiful boys. I cherish every moment with them.” The family enjoys the outdoors—the beach at Crescent Head, fishing. Alex plays rugby and basketball and hopes being active “rubs off on Israel and Ezekiel.”

When not at home, Alex teaches business and coordinates a year level at Macleay Vocational College, a special assistance school primarily for students from juvenile detention. Principal Ryan Martin describes Tasi as an “incredible educator who has made a significant difference in the lives of some of the most socially disadvantaged kids in Kempsey.” Tasi’s message to students in his class? “They can be successful and find meaningful employment despite what they might have experienced outside of school.” Ryan says it’s teachers like Tasi who can “change the trajectory” of a person’s life. “He is respected by all in our community and is doing such important work with calmness and connectedness.”

Alex came to Macleay after stints at Dandenong High School, Kempsey Adventist School and Kempsey High School.

A core faith coupled with compassion has helped Alex stay grounded and motivated. These values “ensure my actions are always purposeful.” He has a message for his classmates: let’s stay connected and give back. “Together, we can make a meaningful impact in our communities.”

The Class of 2014 honours Alex Afoa’s care of family, friends and faith, recognising how he uses this to help students reach their potential.
