It’s that time again. To bring together young Australian bright minds. To inspire thought, words, action and speech to give voice to social injustices.

It’s time for Poetic Justice 2016, a spoken word/performance poetry event hosted by Asian Aid at Avondale College of Higher Education and featuring poets from Avondale School, Macquarie College and Central Coast Adventist School plus more external poets to be announced.

Spoken word is defined as performance-based poetry that focuses on the aesthetics of word play and story-telling. Asian Aid has always been about storytelling. In our modern society, where we are digesting stories on a daily basis, we have to ask, “How many stories are positive?” and, “How many are told with the hopes of changing the world for the better?” We can tell the stories from our work as much as possible, and we do, but it means more when we empower others to do so.

Avondale College of Higher Education, together with Asian Aid, are happily facilitating a stage for young adults to tell stories that inspire change, expand our worldview and build the foundations of passion and drive for their futures. We believe in creative expression as a means of social change, and from this, Poetic Justice was born.

The poets performing at Poetic Justice come from Hunter and Central Coast, New South Wales-based Seventh-day Adventist schools. These young and bright minds will write their own unique pieces on themes that mean something to them. They’ve all had external and established poets visit their classrooms to share their journeys and processes.

Poetic Justice is young. This past year, 2015, was its first year, and we’re back for more.

This event is free to attend but we request a gold coin donation. There will be food and drink available for purchase and all proceeds will support an Asian Aid project, which you’ll hear more about on the night.
