Biography
Dr Bernadene Erasumus has a background in journalism and secondary school teaching. She was asked to write and implement a bridging program for young adults with intellectual disabilities in Hawkes’ Bay, New Zealand, and this is where her passion for volunteering and nonprofit organisations was ignited.Bernadene joined a nonprofit organisation in Tauranga and transitioned from a volunteer to an employee with the job description of professional development coach. During this time, she was able to launch Project Impossible, a small project which utilised funds raised from book sales to realise the dreams of some young adults with intellectual disabilities.
From these experiences she wrote two books, All This And The Moon (aimed particularly at honouring her students) and Raison D’Etre (a sociological account of the NGO within the context of significant government policy change).
When Bernadene’s husband was offered a contract in Australia, she enrolled at Avondale and completed her masters in leadership and management in 2012. The opportunity arose for further research and her interest turned naturally to prosocial behaviour and the leadership and management of complex nonprofit organisations. The organisation she chose represented a fascinating challenge being a hybrid nonprofit which combined church and missionary work with business enterprise.
