The Top 5 FREE places to visit in NYC – Jacinda Ralph

I first visited New York City (NYC) during the Christmas of 2019. It immediately left a charming impression on me. New York City is one of the top tourist destinations in the world and is home to 8.6 million people, and as the saying goes, “This city never sleeps.” There are many places to visit, things to do, unique and delicious food to eat, and bars where you can grab a drink. But like many world-class cities, it can get expensive. Pleasures of the city are high-priced,  but there is plenty of low-cost fun if you know where to look. As a university student, how do you immerse yourself into the culture of NYC, without blowing your budget? Based  on my first-hand experience, on the top 5 FREE places to visit in NYC:

  • Central Park – Did you even go to NYC if you didn’t go to Central Park? Escape the hustle and bustle of the city in Central Park, and become a local. Sip coffee, or eat a bagel while exploring famous movie locations, strolling over bridges, chasing squirrels, admiring statues, doing some people-watching or taking photos to your heart’s content. You might even come across some local talent busting out their moves or drawing illusions on the pavement.
  • Grand Central Station – You wouldn’t think that visiting a train station would be a top pick while on holiday, but Grand Central will change your mind. I loved the iconic, historical architectural building with its zodiac ceiling in the cathedral-like Main Concourse, featuring 12 constellations painted in gold leaf and 2500 stars. It is a great place to visit to simply walk around contemplating “Where are all these people going?”
  • The Highline Walk – Do you ever just need some space? Some peace and quiet? Well, being in NYC that might be a little hard to get; however, the Highline Walk can offer this unique experience. The 2km walk is an elevated linear park on a former railway track—a walk that I’ve been talking about ever since. It’s the perfect mix between seeing the city without the crowds and experiencing some greenery, all while gazing at unique art and design.
  • Washington Square Park – Concerts in NY can be extremely expensive and might seem out of reach to a poor student traveller, but Washington Square Park offers great free musical experiences from an ever-changing array of performers. Sit and soak up the laid-back atmosphere while listening to the ever-changing array of performers. The park’s intimate feel welcomes spontaneous jams, as anyone with an instrument or voice joins in. If you also like to look at or collect local art, there are little stalls to get your fix. The vibrant mix of people found in NYC provides a mix of diverse and dynamic cultures. The attraction invites you to immerse yourself in its richness, through music, visual arts, food, theatre, design etc.
  • Times Square – It’s time to rush! Times Square is the where you can feel the energy of the city, while the world around you rushes by. It is the most iconic place in NYC, and no matter the time of day, it will always be packed with people experiencing the buzz. As a tourist, you could spend hours walking around Times Square—shopping, watching street performers, or simply looking at all the big and bright lights that are hard to escape. You can even get photos with favourite cartoon characters, although their hugs and smiles do require tips. Indulge in a 90c slice of pizza found on every corner in Times Square, the best (and CHEAP) pizza you’ll ever have, made by a local New Yorker. The pizzas range from bar pies and deep dish to vegan, all unique in their thin/ thick crust and toppings. I personally loved the ‘New York Slice’, as it was covered with cheese and tomato, and had a thick base which allowed you to fold in half and continue walking the streets.

This is just a taste of what NYC has to offer, but it will leave you wanting more. So instead of sitting at home reading about the world outside of your bedroom, book that trip! I promise you won’t regret it.
