“We are all witnesses”

Point of difference: Avondale College of Higher Education is one of the few Christian higher education providers in Australia, but what on campus identifies it as such? Avondale College Seventh-day Adventist Church, College Hall and Ladies Chapel lack the presence and the power of a piece of art, argues chaplain Dr Wayne French. So, he and marketing officer Colin Chuang coordinated the production and installation on the Lake Macquarie campus of four large signs representing the values of grace, inspiration, joy and witness. Each features an “active” image of a person and an accompanying Bible verse. The face of each person is obscured because “we want others to put themselves in the image and become part of the message,” says Colin. Credit: George Allertz.

I have appreciated the large signs on campus, but so far, all three have depicted males. I hope the last will depict a female.

I find it strange that Avondale College Seventh-day Adventist Church, with the cross and Bible verses in its foyer and the stained-glass windows and wheat-sheaf cross in its auditorium, is listed as one of the places lacking “the presence and the power of a piece of art.”
