Hoop dreams

Thursday, October 27, 2011

Thirty-four games, 13 teams, two days, one goal: to bring teams from across Australia together, not just to play basketball, but to develop community and experience Christian values. The second Adventist Basketball Championship, held in the Chan Shun Auditorium on Avondale College of Higher Education’s Lake Macquarie campus this past weekend (October 22-23), included teams from the Gold Coast, Kempsey, Melbourne and Western Australia. For the first time, the championship featured a women’s competition, with most valuable player Adelle Bottrell, a Bachelor of Business student, leading Opals to a 43-32 win against Multeasers in the final. In the men’s final, reigning champions Gold Coast Waves beat a resilient Melbourne 112-86. Read the full report at www.avondale.edu.au/connections.—Andrew Parker Credit: Aaron Bellette.

Regeneration begins

Green Avondale: Encouraged either by one hour’s paid leave or by student club COSMOS, staff members and students planted 400 trees in four hours over two days during Avondale College of Higher Education’s Green Week (September 5-10). The trees are all natives donated by not-for-profit community organisation Trees In Newcastle. They are now growing along Girls Walk and near the dam between the Cooranbong Community Services Centre and Avondale Springs, both on Avondale’s Lake Macquarie campus. The planting should promote an increase in flora and fauna on campus and perhaps the return of kangaroos.—Brenton Stacey Credit: Krissie Hopkins.

It’s back: The excitement in Chan Shun Auditorium this past Monday (September 5) was palpable as almost 100 people jump started the Avondale Netball Association. The initiative and enthusiasm of organisers Lucy Johnson, Hannah Purcell and Rebecca Pyke, all first-year students, impressed director of student services Kevin Judge. “We thought there’d only be four teams—we had twelve.” Final-year Bachelor of Education (Secondary) student Conrad Ling, who helped organise the most recent competition in 2008, described the atmosphere and support as “terrific.” The competition this year includes mixed teams and teams from the community.—Sonja Larsen Credit: Sonja Larsen.

Hymns and Songs a hit

More please: Tenor Dell Lawrence and mezzo-soprano Vivienne Calwell’s performance of “The Prayer” earned sustained applause at Hymns and Songs of Praise. The two joined 14 other current and former members of Avondale College of Higher Education vocal ensemble The Promise in their own class reunion, headlining the Homecoming concert. Producer Dy Lyell Heise and his 45-piece Institute of Worship Orchestra moved the audience with grand arrangements and medleys of well-known hymns and songs. The highlights? Tenor Dr Robb Dennis’ powerful rendition of “Joshua,” the string ensemble’s gentle “Saviour Like A Shepherd Lead Us” and the finale, a dedication of “Because He Lives” to the 11 family members who died in the Slacks Creek house fire in Queensland.—Brenton Stacey Credit: Ann Stafford.

Egypt on show: Students from Morisset High School are shown a replica of Tutankhamun’s headpiece as Avondale College of Higher Education chaplain Dr Wayne French gives a guided tour of the Land of the Pharaohs exhibition in Avondale Library (Lake Macquarie campus). The tour includes a demonstration of how the Egyptians made papyrus. Artefacts in the exhibition are from Wayne’s collection. “I love the stories from history,” he says, “and I love to illustrate them.” Avondale president Dr Ray Roennfeldt opened the exhibition this past Thursday (August 11). It runs until August 30.—Sonja Larsen Credit: Sonja Larsen.
