Banquet completes Jacaranda puzzle

Tamara Fleming, Annali Baxter, Emily Marsh and Emma Stilinovic begin to find their piece in the puzzle that is Jacaranda 2013. The Avondale College of Higher Education yearbook, edited by Sara Thompson, project managed by Danelle Morton and designed by a team led by Jacinda Setiawan and Eily Sim, encourages readers to personalise their copy—it includes a sheet of stickers the reader can peel and place on the inside cover. Each person attending the Jacaranda Banquet at Hunter Valley Resort, Sunday, also added two lines to a dot to dot that formed the shape of a goose, a recurring image throughout the yearbook. Appropriately, the team dedicated their work to Tony Martin, head of the School of Humanities and Creative Arts.

Res Banquet turns back time

Res Banquet

Doug Simpson muscles up with Jared Morton (left) and Cory Chalker (right) at the annual Res Banquet for on-campus students at Avondale College of Higher Education. The theme this year: carnival. Instead of a sit down meal, students served themselves food they may have found at festivals in the 1950s—chips, corn on the cob, hot dogs and chocolate-coated bananas. The banquet is a memory event, says assistant director of men’s residence Pr Shane Roberts. Making it more memorable: residence assistants, all of who are students, do most of the work.—Brenton Stacey, public relations officer, Avondale College of Higher Education

Jac Banquet buzz

Launch of yearbook a celebration of you

It looked like the Oscars. Yes, entry to the Jacaranda Banquet was slow, but no one seemed to mind. Students walked the black carpet—a tie in with the yearbook’s CMYK colour model theme—then posed, celebrity-style complete with paparazzi-like flash photography, in front of a large roped off sponsor’s wall. The message: we are celebrating you. And celebrate they did. “It was buzzing,” says Candice Hardy (pictured, left), who led a team of students from Bruna Tawake’s Event Management class in organising the banquet. “We couldn’t even get the students to sit to have their meals.” Credit: Lagani Gairo.
