Avondale wins touch footy gold at uni games

Avondale capped a historic year in sport with its men’s touch football team winning gold at the Australian University Games on the Gold Coast.

The Eagles’ speed prevented The University of Newcastle from making good metres in the gold medal final at Owen Park in Southport on Friday. The 7-5 result reversed that of the bronze medal final at the Eastern University Games in July, which Newcastle won 6-5.

Avondale remained unbeaten throughout the division two competition, defeating several larger institutions including The University of Melbourne, The University of Queensland and the University of Western Sydney. Bachelor of Education (secondary) student Damee Kea received a green and gold medal as one of the players of the competition.

The gold medal qualifies Avondale for division one next year. And it has motivated captain Mark Tipple “to help other Avondale students achieve highly on the national scale in whatever sport they play.”

The men’s team in the Twenty20 cricket competition finished its pool play in fourth but lost the bronze medal final to Curtin University 61-57. Kiran Thapa and Carl Thompson took early wickets and a runout changed the momentum. But Curtin, 4 for 27 after 13 overs, recovered.—with Josh Dye and Colin Chuang
