Professor Marie Bashir unveiled a plaque during a ceremony on Friday before observing students from The University of Sydney’s Sydney Adventist Hospital Clinical School and Avondale College of Higher Education’s Faculty of Nursing and Health in mock clinical placements.

Avondale president Professor Ray Roennfeldt spoke of the higher education provider’s shared values and of how the side-by-side placements will enhance interdisciplinary learning. “Together, [we] will get a feel for what it is to be part of the San’s Christianity in action.”

The centre, a three-level, 3500 square metre facility, “symbolises the development and the growth of the many young people who will pass through its doors, young people who will go from this place to a life of service, to a life of healing, to a life of learning and of teaching,” said Adventist HealthCare board and Avondale College Council chair Dr Barry Oliver in his prayer of dedication.

Final-year nursing student Callum Anderson epitomised this in a speech that emphasised wholism. The centre encourages us to provide the best care by combining our skills, he said, skills that may just “restore a little bit of faith back in humanity.”
