Our Top 5 Tips for Studying at Home

Tuesday, April 28, 2020

When you have to study at home… and only at home. (Thanks COVID-19!) Here are our top 5 tips to make studying at home as painless as possible! *read to the end to find out about our Instagram giveaway!*

1) Keep to a schedule as much as possible

Maybe there’s nowhere to be right now, but simply having a routine that kickstarts the day can make a world of difference. Jump in the shower, make yourself a hot drink, go on a walk- anything that gets you out of bed and invigorated for the day ahead. Decide when you’re going to study, when you’ll have lunch, and don’t forget to pencil in some quality Zoom sesh time with friends and family.

2) Attend your Zoom lectures

Getting up for a 9am Zoom class might sound like the last thing you want to do, but attending that lecture can keep your momentum going with your studies and provide accountability… will you really go back and look at the content on your own later? Plus, if you attend the lecture you can ask questions and get some clarity on the content! Just don’t be that person caught snoozing with their video on!

3) Have a designated work space

Maybe you’ve always done your best studying in the library or that cafe down the street… now where will you have the same sort of concentration? Creating a space in your home, even if it’s just a corner with a desk, where you only go to study will train your mind to be in full on study mode while you’re in that space! Really needing some ambient noise? YouTube is an amazing place – you can listen to 8 hours of cafe sounds right here. Keep your work area clean, organised, and as free as distractions as possible to maintain an optimal work environment. And speaking of distractions…

4) Turn your phone to Do Not Disturb

…or better yet, turn it off. But if you can’t handle going cold turkey on checking your phone yet (we’re all guilty), turning on the Do Not Disturb feature will ensure you can still check the time and have all notifications waiting for you when you’re done with your study sesh.

5) Take a 10 minute break

Get up every hour to take a 10 minute walk around the neighbourhood, do some stretches, and drink some water. Don’t check your phone just yet! Getting some movement in will keep your mind fresh, clear, and maybe even help that required reading make a bit more sense.

We know studying at home isn’t for everyone, and we miss having students on our campuses! But we hope these tips will help you in your studies and get you through the rest of the semester!
