Summer of service brings good to teacher’s tribe

Family members, school students and people in need have all benefited from Caitlin Smith’s summer of service.

The Avondale University College student returns from holidays at home in South Australia with mixed feelings.

Her brother, Joshua, is socially isolated. Severe autism prevents him from attending school or expressing emotions. He now receives full-time care in a group home. Caitlin sees him as often as she can. She sings to calm him down. Not just any song. Joshua memorises those from children’s shows like Thomas the Tank Engine. “I’m Toby the Tram Engine,” says Caitlin. “Joshua is Thomas. ‘Talking’ to each other in character not only reveals more of his feelings but also helps him share them.” And it’s a good discipline to remain positive. “If Joshua senses you’re not happy, that can lead to a meltdown. He’s taught me so much about the power of mind over matter.”

Caitlin further develop her ability to connect as a counsellor at two summer camps. She served as co-chaplain for the juniors and an activities leader for the teens. “From the moment I wake them up to the moment I settle them down, the kids are watching everything I do. They notice what makes me frustrated and what makes me happy.” Seeing them ask questions about God during devotionals and overcome fears during activities affirmed Caitlin’s ministry.

Establishing with a small team the New Life Seventh-day Adventist Church plant in Smithfield Plains and representing the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) as one of two youth ambassadors in the state have helped Caitlin grow spiritually. She preaches for New Life worship services and serves at its ADRA cafe and food pantry, which offers members of the community a free cooked breakfast and free access to basic services. “Every person in need I see who gets to eat a hot meal or make an essential call while making a new friend is an answer to prayer.”

Extending this care to the classroom is next. An arts and primary teaching student, Caitlin has just completed her two-week professional experience placement at Prescott College Southern in Morphett Vale. She begins the academic year at Avondale as a recipient of a leadership scholarship. “I’ve loved every moment at Avondale, and I’m excited to see what God’s plan is for me this year.”
