Inspiring indigenous students

Shirley Fatnowna is our Indigenous Support and Education Officer. She’s also one of our Master of Nursing students. We asked her seven questions. Here are the answers she gave.

Name your top personal achievement.
Becoming a registered nurse.

What’s one thing we wouldn’t know about you?
I’ve helped coordinate three fly’n’build trips to the Solomon Islands.

How do you define success in your occupation?
Continual learning through education and support—I have a wonderful mentor, Dr Alison Smedley.

What are you reading?
A Powerful and Moving Account of a Kanaka Family: Fragments of a Lost Heritage by my late father, Noel. The book keeps me balanced.

Who’s one of your heroes?
I have two: parents Noel and Minnie Fatnowna.

Complete this sentence: “My greatest love in life is . . . ”
Serving God and giving back to the community.

What about your study motivates you?
I want to inspire indigenous students. If I can do this study, they can, too.

Know a nurse-to-be?

Register them for our Nursing Open Day. Avondale is the best place to get their degree because we’re ranked #1 in Australia across all categories. They can see why for themselves on August 16.
