More than a mountain

Kosciuszko – the tallest mountain in Australia. Amazing scenery and a fun walk, but not the focal point of my trip, as I thought it would be. Although Kosciuszko was awe-inspiring and worth the money and time, the two other places that I visited at little cost made it worth the five-hour drive from Sydney. In Winter Kosciuszko is known for its snowy peaks and great skiing runs, but this mountain and surrounding areas can be just as much fun, if not more in Summer.

Jindabyne Clay Pits

Grab your swimmers and towel because our journey begins at Jindabyne Lake. There are a few access points to the lake, but none as great as the Clay Pits. This spot is very popular for families because of its gorgeous surroundings and calm waters. That is, until the kids actually get into the water. You can sit back and make some sandcastles or laze around in the lake. If the views and waters are not enough you can enhance the experience by buying some cheap air mattresses like we did. Stores like Target or sometimes ALDI sell ones at around $16. Alternatively, you can hire a kayak from a local store for an hour at the price of $20.

Mt. Kosciuszko

kosc 2Once you’ve felt enough of the heat and you want to cool down, now is the time to make the Kosciuszko climb. Up at the higher altitudes it can get to as low as 5° C and if you hike on a windy day it can feel even colder so make sure you bring a jacket. An adult lift pass will set you back $29 but after that you are free to enjoy the views. After taking the chairlift you will be hit with the sudden drop in temperature, so you might want to drop by Eagles Nest Restaurant first and grab a coffee and some breakfast for the upcoming 13 kilometre trip to the summit and back. Those travelling on a budget may want to pack food and make some homemade coffee beforehand.

Upon reaching the summit there is a sense of accomplishment being on the highest point in the country and you may take victory in a hard earned selfie on the top of Australia or see if you can get another tourist to take a photo of you standing proudly on top of the podium. Once you have basked in your glory long enough it will be almost time to go home.

Frying Pan

Before you leave make sure you see Frying Pan and do not let the strange name put you off! Located an hour from the mountain is this beautiful landscape that was easily my favourite of the entire trip. Spread out over the fields are massive rocks and boulders that make you feel as though you are in a fantasy movie. This place screams adventure; I could nothelp but climb some of the larger boulders and jump rock to rock. Pack some snacks and a picnic rug and soak in the scenery before finally making your way home.
