Monday, June 18, 2018

The Great Ocean Road is a twisting journey stretching 244km from Torquay to Allansford near Warrnambool.  Its stunning cliff faces and townships along the drive are a huge attraction for tourists, both domestic and international. Some of its many naturally occurring destinations include Loch Ard Gorge and its surrounding cliffs, the Twelve Apostles and Gibson’s Steps. These beautiful landmarks pair perfectly with the picturesque towns and attractions like the Griffith Island Lighthouse, the Australian National Surfing Museum, Gorge Chocolates, and the town of Lorne.

If you’re a fan of isolated beauty, look no further than Loch Ard Gorge. It is located on Victoria’s south coast, the centre of a dangerous stretch of water that has been the site of multiple shipwrecks. Part of the charm associated with this location lies in its history. A cargo ship named the Loch Ard ran aground in this gorge in 1878, resulting in the deaths of fifty-two passengers. The rich history of the gorge, combined with the fact that it is free to visit, makes the gorge a perfect location for any road trip.

After a pleasing walk through some colourful brush, tourists will stumble upon The Griffith Island Lighthouse. It has been guiding ships in the night for nearly 160 years, making it one of the oldest lighthouses in Australia. Built by Scottish stonemasons, the lighthouse is located next to the remains of the lighthouse custodian’s residence. Due to the picturesque views of the ocean and lighthouse, it is rare that a trip to the lighthouse will disappoint. The lighthouse is free to visit and is certain to leave you wanting more.

The Twelve Apostles are a monument to the beauty of Australia’s coast. They are a group of standing rock monuments on Victoria’s south coast. Located only minutes away from Loch Ard Gorge, they boast a stunning view of the ocean, as well as breathtaking visions of the sunset. However due to the effects of the ocean’s currents, the twelve apostles have seen a significant amount of erosion, resulting in the loss of several of the standing structures. These monuments are also free of charge, placing them high on the list of must-sees in South Victoria.

Gibson’s Steps hug closely to the side of a colossal cliff leading right to a spectacular view of the water. Visitors to this site will be astounded by the sheer size of the cliffs, as they dwarf everything below. Besides the cliffs, two other stone structures can be seen offshore, known in the area as Gog and Magog. Gibson’s Steps are very close to Loch Ard Gorge and the Twelve Apostles. It is free to visit, and like Loch Ard Gorge and the Twelve Apostles, it provides jaw-dropping views of the sunset.

The Australian National Surfing Museum is located in Torquay and offers a detailed outline on the history of surfing in Australia, the beaches and surfers in Australia’s history. The museum requires a small entry fee, a worthwhile price to witness the astonishing relationship that Australians have developed with the surf. The museum also offers an exclusive venture into the world of surf culture, including music, movies and fashion, among others, as well as an up-close-and-personal look at the classic VW Kombi minivan. What’s not to love?

For those with a slightly sweeter tooth, Gorge Chocolates is located on a farm a short distance from the Twelve Apostles, providing close access to the delights of the chocolate connoisseurs. They are a locally owned and operated business that sells high quality chocolate products. Because of their spectacular customer service and their exquisite products, it is easy to see why their gift shop is high on the list of sites to see along the Great Ocean Road.

Lastly, if you’re looking for a beautiful spot to wind down and have a relaxed afternoon shopping, or even just a chat at a café, then Lorne is the ideal town for you. Lorne is filled with idyllic cafés, iconic beaches and wildlife, as well as various peaceful walking tracks, lakes and waterfalls. It also boasts an abounding art community, with events that cover a wide spectrum of art forms. With so much to offer, Lorne is an obvious choice for any traveller looking for a tranquil holiday.

The Great Ocean Road abounds with colourful and majestic scenery, as well as beautiful towns and even more beautiful people. Their serene location and homely way of life makes the Great Ocean Road a perfect route for any holiday, to suit any budget.
