Left a career in business behind to give back through the classroom

A cute statement by his young daughter—“We need more boy teachers!”—prompted Brent O’Brien to leave his career in business behind. He’s now one of our Master of Teaching (Primary) students. We asked this learning support officer four questions. Here are the answers he gave.

Name your top personal and professional achievement.
Moving to Asia at 24 and getting a job. And starting the homepage for the Asian region of a multinational financial information company—it won an award in its first year.

What’s one thing we wouldn’t know about you?
I work with students who need extra educational and social support. Sometimes this means working on literacy and numeracy or just kicking a ball around and having a chat.

How do you define success?
Helping students realise their potential.

What are you reading?
You mean what I should be reading? My wife’s latest young adult novel. I’m yet to read it because school’s so full on. I just don’t have enough time. In my last job, though, all I seemed to do was read—about markets and news. It was great because you had so much access to information.
