Robbie Bechaz

You may have last seen alumnus Robbie Bechaz graduating from our Bachelor of Education (Secondary) course in 1995. He’s now a design and technology teacher at a public high school in Victoria’s Goulburn Valley and lives surrounded by cattle and sheep farms in the beautiful town of Tallygaroopna. We asked him 10 questions. Here are the answers he gave.

How did you end up at Avondale?
I visited a friend who studied there and loved the atmosphere. So, I quit my job.

Fondest memory?
The Cruise Mobile, Vermin Busters and dormitory life in general.

What did you do after graduation?
I worked in retail management for a few years.

List two significant accomplishments.
Being married to my beautiful wife and raising a family. And being a teacher and seeing my students flourish in their careers after school.

Where’s the next place on your travel bucket list?
I’d like to take the family to Uluru.

How do you enjoy spending your alone time?
There’s nothing better than sitting on the edge of a creek with a fishing rod in one hand and a hot pie and sauce in the other.

What’s the kindest thing someone has done for you?
A bloke by the name of Simon Banks gave me the shirt off his back many, many times during my Avondale years. It’s something I’ll never forget.

If you could do it all over again, would you pursue the same career?
Yes, absolutely. It’s been extremely rewarding, and I’ve made many amazing friends.

Do you live by any piece of advice or motto?
I regularly tell my students, “There will be many choices in your life; try your best to make the right ones.”

Your top tip for interacting with someone you disagree with?
Let them say what they want. Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion. Of course, I’m always right, though!
